London Jazz review of Grand Union Orchestra Dir. Tony Haynes. If Paradise…

(Queen Elizabeth Hall, September 25th 2011. Review by Adam Tait)

Tony Haynes, composer and the Director of the Grand Union Orchestra, describes If Paradise… as ‘a kind of musical journey – but through emotions’, and there is indeed a constant sense of progression in the music…

the tranquilly seated blind sitar player Baluji Shrivastav, balanced and entirely immersed in the music. His calm presence, juxtaposed against the feverish bursts of animation from the drum kit, is the image which will stay longest in the mind.”

All About Jazz review of Grand Union Orchestra If Paradise Red Gold 2011

By CHRIS MAY, Published: October 6, 2011

From the east, the line-up includes two angel-voiced Bangladeshi singers, Lucy Rahman and Akash Sultan; tabla player Yousuf Ali Khan, also from Bangladesh; and, from India, sitarist Baluji Shrivastav. They are joined, from the London jazz scene, by saxophonists Tony Kofi, Phil Todd and Louise Elliott; trumpeters Paul Jayasinha, Claude Deppa and Kevin Robinson; trombonists Tim Smart, Ros Davies, John Kenny and Haynes; guitarist Gerry Hunt; drummer Brian Abrahams; and bass guitarist Keith Morris (tragically, since killed in a hit and run auto accident). The band includes an unusually high proportion of gifted soloists…

The disc is rounded out by a 13-minute instrumental, ‘The Radiance Of A Thousand Suns,’ a showcase for Shrivastav, Todd and Jayasinha. One of Haynes' first experiments with Indian ragas, its title is taken from a report, quoting the Bhagavad Gita, given by a scientist watching the first test of the atomic bomb.”
